Quick — what do think of when you hear “Happy New Year” — champagne, fireworks, parties … or Ye Ol’ New Year’s Resolution? We all have the best of intentions, but after the snow melts and the rubber meets the road to personal growth, it gets a little tougher to stay on task. So here’s what I’m proposing for 2014.
Make One Big Ass Resolution (B.A.R.)
That’s right – only one. I don’t usually talk or write like this, but I really MEAN it! And make it big enough that it’s easy to remember and one you can work on every day. Before rolling your eyes and clicking to your next email, think of it this way. When you spend all year perfecting One B.A.R. it becomes part of your DNA. It’s easier than you think.
Think about this at the 5000 foot level – not that you need to lose 10 pounds, or that you’re swearing off the “skinny double whatever-it-is”. Think about what’s going to make you a better person – what’s going to make you more productive, what is it that you’re going to do this year that will get you closer to where you want to go life and in your business? Here’s what happened to me.
I went through an especially challenging time taking care of my mom and it came to a head last year (read about it here if you like). Something needed to change so one day I decided to find something joyful. When I was driving to my first consultation that day I not only found one Joy, I found three more. I tried it the next day and found joys all around me that I never noticed before. Someone waving me on in traffic, kids’ laughter, pulling into the perfect parking spot – they were everywhere! (If you want to see my Joys, LIKE my Facebook page and they’ll pop up in your news-feed.)
Stuck for some ideas? What about one of these? This year think:
- every time I have a negative thought about myself, I’ll say “Stop” aloud (and hopefully out of anyone else’s’ earshot).
- I will walk at least three times a week.
- I will steer clear of gossip whether listening to it or participating in it.
- I will get more sleep.
- I won’t stress over stuff I can’t control.
You have a whole year to think about it, practice it, and work on this. It’s even okay to mess up (oh…there’s another one, “This year I will forgive myself when I mess up“). I KNOW you can DO this and would love to read your Big Ass Resolution. Please let me know by commenting below. And one more thing…all the Best in 2014!
