I was on the phone with a favorite client this morning. We’ve been working together for a while now, and she’s doing some really good work. But she admits that her progress getting this one little piece of the business on auto-pilot (that she has incredible passion and heart for) ALWAYS takes a back seat to everything else. What is it?
Selling Herself — it’s disguised in different ways, but bottom line, this is the problem.
That’s hard isn’t it? Convincing another person that what they really need to solve their Big Ugly Monster is YOU!
A lot of this may be how you were raised, “I don’t want to brag because people will think I’m full of myself”. Or it may be that you think everyone knows this stuff so why should someone listen or hire you. As 2014 comes to a close and your 2015-marketing calendar is open to new opportunities … it’s time to turn around that thinking. So here’s your assignment for the rest of the year:
Incorporate Your Personal Power Proclamations in Your Everyday Self-talk
Personal Proclamation #1: “It’s NOT about ME.”
It really isn’t. Start focusing your attention away from yourself and on what others need and really WANT from you. Take yourself out of the equation; ask former happy clients what you did for them that really helped them. Is this product or service something you already offer. If not, you might want to add this to your product and service menu.
Personal Proclamation #1:“I am here to serve.”
Thinking like this changes EVERYTHING. Here’s why. If you worked for someone else and it was your job description to serve, how would you approach your next potential client? Would it make you feel less “salsey” because it was your job? Remember, the tools and the training you’ve spent years acquiring can actually help someone else solve their Big Hairy Problem.
Personal Proclamation #3: “My potential clients deserve the gift of Me.”
This is the BIG one. How many of your clients would wish they never worked with you? I’m guessing very few, if any. Now imagine what their lives would look like if you never had the opportunity to share the gift of YOU – not a pretty picture. When someone decides to work with you and pays you for what got you into the business in the first place, you honor them by sharing your gifts and your personal genius.
So there you have it. From now on, every time you’re tempted to think or say,
“I don’t know how to sell myself,” or,
“I can sell a product but it’s hard to sell my services,” or
“I can’t imagine that anyone would want to pay me a higher price to do that…”
And replace those thoughts with your Personal Power Proclamations. You can do this and your clients will be the better for it.
